Square Enix’s Triangle Strategy for Meta Quest was released last week. MIXED tried it with Quest 3. Here’s our opinion.
The original game was released on Nintendo Switch and PC in 2022, and now you can play the tactical RPG in your Meta Quest, either in VR or in pass mode.
I played Triangle Strategy for the first time and will only talk about the VR/MR conversion in this article. As far as I know, it’s a straight forward port and content wise, nothing has changed from the original.
How does the Triangle approach play out in mixed reality?
Triangle Strategy alternates between battles, which take place in colorful 3D environments and 2D cutscenes on the big screen. There is also a nice 3D map where you can choose the main and side quests.
The true integrated mode of the game is an overarching view that covers your surroundings, not at all, beyond that. There is no interaction between the game and the environment or anything like that. If you like to stay realistic while playing, you will still enjoy the mixed reality mode.

3D environments in the style of old Japanese RPGs from the SNES era look very good in VR or MR thanks to the clear 3D lenses and Quest 3’s clarity.
You can use your hands to move and move around the 3D environment freely in space. Unfortunately, zooming or panning is not supported, but and/or and if you activate the Meta Quest sleep mode, you can scale the 3D environment along the vertical axis and play Triangle Strategy. you are still sleeping in your bed or bed, which is great.
Besides, Triangle Strategy doesn’t benefit from VR and MR, and overall the game is still stuck in the 2D line from which it originated. Yes, you use the controls to select and move your characters around, but the menus are all flat and feel like non-central elements.
Is it worth buying? And for whom?
Triangle Strategy has been optimized for Quest 2, and if you use the Quest Games Optimizer and really want the 3D environments to shine, you can increase the resolution by up to 50 percent, even if only the 3D environments and the map are I will benefit from this. High resolution has no effect on 2D pre-rendered cutscenes.
For Meta Quest, there aren’t many games that offer more than 50 hours of entertainment, even less tactical RPGs. Therefore, Triangle Strategy is very popular. If you like the genre, like the art style, or have always wanted to play Strategy Triangle and have Quest 3 or 3s, I would recommend the game. If you already play the Triangle strategy, the decision is even more difficult. Is it useful for stereoscopic 3D and mixed reality? You have to decide for yourself.
Alternatively, you can take Demeo, which is built from the ground up for virtual reality, supports multiplayer, and will keep you hooked for hours.
Triangle Strategy is available in the Horizon Store.
